There are so many differing views regarding hell. Some view it as a place of eternal torment in everlasting flames of fire; some view it as the grave where every one is destined to go, even though some of us choose different forms of physical eternal rest and some view it as what we are experiencing right now here on earth.
From this lesson, we will learn that hell is the grave where the dead are buried; hell (the grave) will be cast into the lake of fire; hell is a place of punishment with literal fire that will burn and not be quenched or stopped, hell is a place where the angels that sinned are reserved for judgment and hell was never prepared for people - it was prepared for the devil and his angels.
1) HELL IS THE GRAVE
Throughout the Old Testament, hell is referred to as the literal grave where everyone- good or bad- is destined to go when they die.
Psalm 9: 16- 17
16) The Lord is known by the judgment which He executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands.
17) The wicked shall be turned into hell (the grave) and all the nations that forget God.
Psalm 16: 10 (David is speaking)
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell (the grave) neither wilt thou suffer thy Holy One (Jesus Christ) to see corruption. (Acts 2: 27, 31)
David looked forward to a resurrection from the dead at the return of Christ for His saints, when his mortal body would be released from the grave as an immortal body over which death would have no power. (1st Corinthians 15: 51- 55)
HELL (THE GRAVE) IS NEVER FULL
Proverbs 27: 20
Hell and destruction are never full....
Isaiah 5: 13 - 14
13) Therefore my people are gone into captivity because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished: and their glory and their multitude dried up with thirst.
14) Therefore hell (the grave) hath enlarged herself and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory and their multitude, and their pomp and he that rejoiceth shall descend into it.
Many of the children of Israel who went into captivity died while in captivity and therefore hell (the grave) enlarged herself to receive their dead bodies.

NEW TESTAMENT REFERENCES TO HELL AS THE GRAVE
Matthew 16: 15- 18 (Jesus is speaking)
15) He saith unto them, but whom say ye that I am?
16) And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17) And Jesus answered and said unto him, blessed art thou Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee.
18) And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell (the grave) shall not prevail against it.
Jesus told Peter that He would build His church on the priniciple that He is the Son of the living God. Death would have no authority over His church because He would conquer death at His resurrection. (Matthew 28: 1-6)
Revelation 1: 18 (Jesus is speaking)
I am He that liveth and was dead; and behold I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell (the grave) and of death. (keys are symbolic of authority, therefore Jesus has the power over death and the grave.)
Revelation 6: 8 (The Apostle John is speaking)
And I looked and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death and Hell (the grave) followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth to kill with the sword, and with hunger and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.
The grave is where we all go when we die so it is logical that hell -the grave- would follow death.
2) THE UNQUENCHABLE FIRE OF HELL
Mark 9: 43 - 47 (Jesus is speaking)
43) And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, the fire that shall never be quenched.
44) Where their WORM DIETH NOT and the fire is not quenched.
45) And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched:
46) Where their WORM DIETH NOT and the fire is not quenched.
47) And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
48) Where their WORM DIETH NOT and the fire is not quenched.
PLEASE TAKE SPECIAL NOTE AND RECOGNIZE THAT NO MENTION IS MADE OF PEOPLE BURNING FOREVER. THE ONLY THING MENTIONED AS NOT DYING ARE THE WORMS.
3) FOR WHOM WAS HELL PREPARED?
HELL WAS PREPARED FOR THE DEVIL AND HIS ANGELS
Mathew 25: 44 (Jesus is speaking)
Then shall He say to them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed into everlasting fire, PREPARED FOR THE DEVIL (the one who opposes God)AND HIS ANGELS (those who follow after teachings that are in oppostion to the teachings outlined by God in His word).
2nd Peter 2: 4
For if God spared not the angels (those who follow after the teachings that are in oppostion to the teaching outlined by God in His word) that sinned but cast them down to hell (the grave) and delivered them into chains of darkness (death) to be reserved unto judgment.
DEATH AND HELL WILL BE CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE
Revelation 20:14, 15
14) And death and hell (the grave) were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
