A) What is the meaning of the word ‘baptize’?
The word ‘baptize’ involves the process of immersion, submergence and emergence. This means that you enter the water; you go under the water and then you come up out of the water. This form of baptism identifies the individual with the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Romans 6: 3-7
3) Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death?
4) Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up fom the dead by the glory of the Father, even so also we should walk in newness of life.
5) For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection:
6) knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7) For he that is dead is freed from sin.
B) Why must a person be baptized?
A person must be baptized for the remission or forgiveness of sins.
Acts 2: 38 (Peter is speaking)
…Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of
sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
C) Who gave the command to be baptized?
The command to be baptized was given by Jesus Christ.
Matthew 28: 18 – 20 (Jesus is speaking)
18)…All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19) Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost:
20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.
D) When should a person be baptized?
A person should be baptized when Jesus has been preached to them and they believe on Him.
a) In Acts 2, after the Holy Ghost fell upon the disciples, Peter preached his first sermon. This sermon included a lesson on the confirmation of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, as stated by the prophet Joel in Joel 2:28-32 (Acts 2: 14-21); a lesson on Jesus Christ – His death, burial and resurrection (Acts 2: 22-32); a lesson on Jesus Christ being exalted to the right hand f God and being made Lord (ruler over everything) and Christ (the anointed One) by God the Father-after they had wrongfully crucified Him. (Acts 2: 33-36).
After the people understood the teachings about Jesus Christ and their role in wrongfully crucifying Him, they asked Peter what to do. Peter told them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and they would receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Upon hearing and understanding the teachings of Peter regarding the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the people accepted the teachings and were baptized immediately. (Acts 2: 37-41)
b) In Acts 8: 5- 12, Philip preached unto the people of Samaria. When they believed what Philip taught concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized.
c) In Acts 8: 26-38, Philip preached Jesus Christ to the Ethiopian Eunuch. When the Eunuch understood what Philip taught him about Jesus Christ, he saw some water nearby and asked if there was anything preventing him from being baptized. Philip explained to him that if he believed the message that was preached about Jesus Christ, he could be baptized. The Eunuch acknowledged his belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and was baptized immediately.
d) In Acts 10, we meet Cornelius. Cornelius believed in the Lord, God and because of this, he was kind to the people and always prayed to God. He had a vision in which the Lord told him to send for Peter. At first, Peter did not want to go because Cornelius was not a Jew and a Jew never associated with a Gentile, but the Holy Spirit told him to go. Peter was obedient to the instruction of the Holy Spirit and went to Cornelius. He spoke Cornelius and his household of Jesus Christ and while he was speaking, the Holy Ghost fell upon them and Peter commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.
e) In acts 16: 16-33, Paul and Silas are imprisoned because Paul cast a spirit of divination out of a girl who was making a lot for money for her bosses. At 12 o’clock midnight, Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises unto God and the prisoners heard them. All of a sudden there was an earthquake. All of the cell
doors opened and everyone’s bands were loosed. The prison guard was so sure that everyone had escaped that he drew his sword and got ready to kill himself but Paul told him that everyone was still there. He was amazed that not one prisoner had made the choice to escape. He asked what he must do to be saved and Paul and Silas told him to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and he and his house would be saved. They then taught him and his family about the Lord Jesus Christ and they all believed and were baptized that very night.
Can a person be baptized more than once?
Yes! A person can be baptized more than once if they did not understand the true meaning of baptism when they were baptized.
Acts 19: 1-6 (KJV)
1) And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2) He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3) And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4) Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
