After the death of Solomon, Israel became a divided kingdom. Solomon's son Rehoboam ruled over the tribe of Judah and Benjamin while Jeroboam ruled over the other tribes of Israel. Judah remained in Jerusalem and Israel went to Mount Ephraim.
Jeroboam was afraid that the if he allowed the people to go to Jerusalem to offer their sacrifices unto God, they would re-establish their loyalty to Rehoboam and turn around and kill him.
To prevent this from happening, Jeroboam made two golden calves. He told the people that it was too
much for them to go to Jerusalem to worship the God who delivered them from Egypt and that the golden calf was now their god. He put one calf in Beth-el and one in Dan.
Jeroboam also made altars for sacrifices and made priests of the lowest of the people who were not Levites and he himself made offerings upon the altar. This was something only the High Priests were supposed to do.
Jeroboam also changed the day of the feast which was appointed by God. Instead of the people honouring the day of the feast on the 15th day of the 7th Read 1st Kings 12 for the entire story of the dividing of the Kingdom of Israel and the establishment of false worship within the nation of Israel.
Are you worshipping God according to His way or are you following the way of worship established by man?
